| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea occupies the central field, depicted within an oval frame formed by sheaves of grain tied with a ribbon bearing an inscription, surmounted by a five-pointed star with radiating rays. The Korean legend 조선민주주의인민공화국중앙은행 (Central Bank of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea) arcs around the upper periphery in Hangul script, while the Latin legend DPR OF KOREA 1992 appears along the lower border. The fineness 999 and weight 27g are also inscribed in the lower field. |

Issued in 1992 as part of North Korea's hard-currency foreign exchange program, this piece was never intended for domestic circulation. The DPRK produced numismatic silver issues throughout the late 1980s and 1990s almost exclusively for sale to foreign collectors through state-controlled trading companies, generating convertible currency the regime could not otherwise easily obtain.
KM#59 belongs to a cluster of thematic issues from this period targeting the international collector market on environmental subjects then fashionable in Western numismatics.
