Jurij Vega, born in 1754 near Zagorje, was a Slovenian artillery officer and mathematician whose logarithmic tables were so accurate they remained in standard use by navigators and engineers for over a century after his death. His 1793 publication of trigonometric and logarithmic tables went through over a hundred editions across Europe. This coin was issued the year Slovenia joined the European Union — one of the last domestic commemorative issues before the tolar was retired in favor of the euro in 2007, giving the series an inadvertent finality.
