Slovenia declared independence from Yugoslavia in June 1991 following a ten-day war — one of the shortest and least bloody of the Yugoslav succession conflicts. The tolar, introduced that same year, was the new state's first currency, and commemorative silver issues like this one served the practical function of building foreign exchange reserves during a period when Slovenia was actively seeking international recognition and IMF membership.
