Mongolia's late-1990s lunar gold series was produced in fractional weights aimed squarely at the collector bullion market then expanding across East Asia. The 1998 Tiger issue appeared the same year Mongolia was absorbing severe economic shocks from the Asian financial crisis, which hit regional demand for commemorative precious metal issues hard — making distribution runs for pieces like this one smaller in practice than authorized mintages sometimes suggest.
