Additional information

Mongolia's late-1990s lunar gold series was produced in fractional weights to meet export demand rather than domestic circulation — these pieces were never intended to pass through Mongolian hands at face value. The 500 Tögrög denomination was essentially nominal, the coin's melt value alone dwarfing it many times over at issue.

The Rabbit year fell in 1999, the twelfth and final position in the sixty-year Mongolian calendar cycle before its reset — a point that gave the issue mild promotional significance in Asian collector markets at the time.
