| Additional information |
The saiga antelope, once ranging in vast migratory herds across the Mongolian steppe, had collapsed to near-extinction by the early 2000s following catastrophic poaching pressure after the Soviet Union's dissolution left rural populations without income and enforcement structures in ruins. Mongolia's subspecies, Saiga tatarica mongolica, is confined to the Shargiin Gobi and surrounding areas — a range so restricted it is essentially a relict population. This coin was issued the same year the IUCN listed the Mongolian saiga as Critically Endangered.
