Obverse description The national emblem of Mongolia, the Soyombo symbol, is depicted prominently in the left-center field, rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished proof surface. To the right of the Soyombo, the country name appears in traditional Mongolian script (Todo script) arranged vertically. The Latin legend MONGOLIA runs along the right side of the field, and the denomination 500 is inscribed at the bottom center, with the Tögrög currency symbol below it. The coin is struck with a fine reeded border running along the inner edge of the rim.

Reverse description A detailed high-relief depiction of a pelican standing upright on a rocky outcrop, facing left, occupying the central field of the coin. The bird is rendered with fine feather detail, a characteristic elongated bill, and webbed feet gripping the rock; reed vegetation is visible in the lower left background, suggesting a wetland habitat. The curved legend ENDANGERED WILDLIFE is inscribed in two parts along the upper left and upper right of the field respectively. The date 1996 appears in the exergue at the base of the design. The reverse is struck to proof quality with a frosted device against a mirrored field.
