Additional information

Tanbaly — a gorge in the Chu-Ili mountains southeast of Almaty — contains one of Central Asia's most significant concentrations of Bronze Age petroglyphs, with over 5,000 carvings spanning roughly 1,400 years of human activity. UNESCO added the site to the World Heritage List in 2004, two years after this coin's issue, making the timing of Kazakhstan's decision to commemorate it through its numismatic program a quiet piece of prescience. The site had been known to Soviet archaeologists since the 1950s but remained largely unprotected until independence.
