Muhtar Auezov, born 1897 in what is now the East Kazakhstan Region, is the defining figure of modern Kazakh literature — his epic novel-chronicle Abai Zholy spent decades suppressed or carefully managed by Soviet censors who recognized its implicit argument for Kazakh cultural continuity. He navigated the Stalin years by framing his work as socialist realism while encoding something considerably more nationalist beneath the surface.
Kazakhstan has issued commemorative silver for Auezov before; this 2022 piece marks the 125th anniversary of his birth.
