The Eurasian Economic Community, whose tenth anniversary this coin marks, was established by treaty in October 2000 among Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Tajikistan — a post-Soviet attempt to formalize the economic integration that the CIS had largely failed to deliver. Kazakhstan under Nazarbayev was among the most enthusiastic proponents, having pushed for Eurasian integration frameworks since the mid-1990s.
