Part of Kazakhstan's ongoing "Sacred Places of the Islamic World" series, this issue commemorates the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca — a site to which Kazakhstan's predominantly Muslim population has had renewed pilgrimage access only since independence in 1991. Soviet-era restrictions had effectively severed that connection for decades.
