Additional information

Aisha Bibi was an 11th-century Karakhanid noblewoman whose mausoleum near Taraz is one of the few surviving examples of pre-Mongol Central Asian terracotta architectural decoration. Legend holds she died en route to meet her betrothed, Karakhan, and was buried where she fell — the mausoleum erected in her memory by Karakhan himself. The structure nearly collapsed before Soviet-era restoration stabilized it, though the restoration remains controversial among architectural historians for replacing original terracotta panels.
