The Eurasian Economic Union formally came into existence on January 1, 2015, when the treaty signed by Kazakhstan, Russia, and Belarus took effect — absorbing and superseding the earlier Eurasian Customs Union framework. Armenia joined days later, Kyrgyzstan by August of the same year. Kazakhstan's role was pivotal: Nursultan Nazarbayev had been publicly advocating a Eurasian economic bloc since a 1994 speech at Moscow State University, making him arguably the intellectual originator of the project long before it became politically viable for Moscow.
This commemorative marks the fifth anniversary of that 2015 founding.
