| Obverse description | Central field features the state emblem of Kazakhstan superimposed upon a stylized starburst composed of layered, radiating geometric panels reminiscent of a decorative order or medal, rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished field. The emblem depicts a shanyrak (the crown of a yurt) with radiating uyk (support poles) flanked by mythical winged horses, with the inscription ҚАЗАҚСТАН below. The Cyrillic legend ҚАЗАҚСТАН ҰЛТТЫҚ БАНКІ curves along the upper periphery, while the denomination 500 ТЕҢГЕ appears prominently at the lower field. Fineness and weight indications — 24 gr. and Ag 925 — are inscribed in the lower left and right fields respectively. The entire design is bordered by a continuous ring of raised beads. |

Kazakhstan declared independence on December 16, 1991, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union — making it one of the last former Soviet republics to do so. The National Bank issued this commemorative a full decade later, by which point the tenge itself was only eight years old, having replaced the Soviet ruble in November 1993 after a period of painful monetary transition during which Kazakhstan briefly used Russian ruble transitional coupons.
