Additional information

Miguel Grau Seminario, the Peruvian naval commander commemorated here, died aboard the monitor Huáscar at the Battle of Angamos in October 1879, during the War of the Pacific against Chile. By 1984, Peru's economy was deteriorating sharply under the weight of external debt and inflation that would soon spiral into one of the worst hyperinflationary episodes in Latin American history — within five years, the Sol de Oro itself would be abolished and replaced by the Inti at a ratio of 1,000 to one.
