The 2019 series marked a significant redesign for Kenyan currency — the Constitution of Kenya 2010 prohibits the image of any living person on banknotes or coins, which forced the Central Bank to retire the long-running Moi- and Kenyatta-portrait series entirely. This note was part of the first complete set issued in full compliance with that constitutional requirement.

Thomas De La Rue has printed Kenyan notes since independence, a relationship stretching back to 1966. The print run of just over twelve million pieces is modest for a high-denomination note in active commercial use.
