This note was issued as part of Israel's final sheqalim series before the 1985 currency reform replaced the sheqel with the new sheqel at a ratio of 1,000 to 1 — a reform necessitated by inflation that had reached roughly 450% annually by 1984. The 500 sheqalim denomination, unthinkable a decade earlier, was already inadequate by the time it entered circulation.
Zvi Narkiss, the engraver credited on this note, was also the designer behind the Hebrew typeface Narkissim — an unusual overlap between typographic and intaglio work rarely seen in a single career.
