Obverse description Portrait of Austrian feminist writer and artist Rosa Mayreder (1858–1938) in right-facing profile vignette, rendered in intaglio, occupying the left and central portion of the note. The denomination 500 and the text FÜNFHUNDERT SCHILLING appear in guilloche-enriched letterforms, with the issuance date WIEN, am 1.1.1997 and the issuing bank name OESTERREICHISCHE NATIONALBANK printed below. Signature lines for the President, Generaldirektor, and Generalrat are present in the lower register.

Reverse description The reverse carries a dual portrait vignette of Rosa Mayreder alongside her husband, the Viennese architect Karl Mayreder, set within a decorative guilloche underprint. To the right, a period group photograph depicts members of early women's associations gathered at the Federal Parliament building in Vienna. The denomination 500 and FÜNFHUNDERT SCHILLING are inscribed in the upper register, with a quotation from Rosa Mayreder's 1905 writings running across the lower portion of the note.
