Additional information

The Dynastes hercules, the Hercules beetle, is not native to Indonesia — it is a Central and South American species. This coin belongs to Indonesia's ongoing "fauna" 500 rupiah series, which has featured various animals since the denomination's reintroduction, and the choice of a non-endemic insect is an oddity that collectors occasionally note. The series is struck at the Perum Peruri mint in Karawang, West Java, which has handled Indonesian coinage production since 1971.
