Additional information

Issued during one of the most destructive currency crises in modern Asian history, this coin entered circulation just as the 1997–98 financial collapse was gutting the rupiah's purchasing power — at its worst, the rupiah lost roughly 80% of its value against the dollar in a matter of months. The 500 rupiah denomination, once meaningful for daily transactions, became nearly vestigial almost immediately after these pieces were struck.

Indonesia's transition from Suharto's 32-year New Order regime in 1998 adds a political dimension to the series' run.
