Expo '90 in Osaka — formally the International Garden and Greenery Exposition — ran from April to September 1990 and drew over 23 million visitors, making it one of the most attended world expositions of its decade. Seychelles was among dozens of small island nations that issued commemorative gold coinage tied to the event, a practice that had less to do with horticultural enthusiasm and more to do with the lucrative collector market Japan represented at the time.
