The Maldives Monetary Authority replaced the earlier Maldivian Rupee with the Rufiyaa in 1981, and this 500-denomination note — the highest value in the series — was introduced as the island economy began shifting seriously toward tourism revenue and the foreign exchange pressures that came with it. Thomas De La Rue's production quality for this series is clean and technically competent, though not especially distinctive within their broader output for small island issuers of the period.

The sole security feature is a watermark, which by 1990 was already considered minimal protection for a high-denomination note. No security thread, no see-through register.
