Belarus has issued large-format silver pieces in this weight class since the early 2000s, typically timed to Orthodox feast days or church anniversaries significant to the Belarusian faithful. Nicholas of Myra — the historical fourth-century bishop whose relics were transported to Bari in 1087 — remains one of the most venerated saints across the Eastern Orthodox world, and his cult in Belarus predates the Soviet period by centuries despite decades of state atheism suppressing public devotion.
The gold-plated elements on issues of this type are applied selectively after striking, a technique the National Bank refined across several earlier collector releases in the same diameter range.
