| Reverse description | The reverse presents a finely struck depiction of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God (Kazanskaya), showing the Virgin Mary in three-quarter bust facing slightly right, with the Christ Child before her in frontal view, both rendered with gilded halos and garments in high relief against a silver field. The composition is framed by an elaborate gold-plated decorative border of interlacing floral and geometric ornament in the Byzantine tradition, evoking the appearance of an icon riza or oklad. Abbreviated Cyrillic inscriptions МР ОУ and IС ХС appear in the upper corners, identifying the Mother of God and Jesus Christ respectively. The inscription КАЗАНСКАЯ is engraved in a rectangular cartouche along the lower margin of the border. |
