Additional information

Issued under a long-running Belarusian program of large-format devotional silver coins, this piece commemorates the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God — one of the most venerated objects in Russian Orthodox Christianity, whose original is considered lost since its theft from Kazan Cathedral in 1904. The National Bank of Belarus produced numerous icons in this format through the 2000s and 2010s, the series functioning partly as bullion-adjacent collectibles and partly as diplomatic cultural gestures toward Orthodox religious identity during a period when Lukashenko's government was actively cultivating ties with the Russian Orthodox Church.

The selective gold plating on pieces of this type is applied by electroforming after striking, not as a separate inlay, which can produce minor variation in coverage between individual examples.
