The Vsevelikoye Voysko Donskoye — the Don Cossack Military Government headquartered at Novocherkassk — issued its own currency throughout the Civil War period as the White movement struggled to maintain functional economies in territory it controlled. This 500-rouble note dates to 1919, a year of dramatic territorial reversals for the Don Army under Ataman Bogaevsky: early advances collapsed by summer, and Bolshevik forces had retaken much of the Don region before the year ended.
Notes printed locally at Novocherkassk during this period frequently show inconsistent ink coverage and uneven paper quality — a direct consequence of wartime supply disruptions, not press deterioration. Redemption after the White collapse was nil.
