The 1922 RSFSR note series was printed during the Soviet government's first serious attempt to stabilize a currency system that had completely collapsed under wartime communism. Hyperinflation had rendered earlier sovznaki nearly worthless — by 1922, prices were being quoted in millions of pre-war rubles. This 500-rouble denomination was effectively small change in real purchasing terms when issued.
The series was superseded within months by the chervonets reform of late 1922, which introduced gold-backed currency alongside the dying sovznaki. Most of these notes circulated hard and briefly before being retired.
