Brunei's 500 Ringgit notes of this generation were withdrawn from circulation in stages as the currency board pushed toward polymer substrates and more sophisticated security specifications. The interchangeability arrangement between Brunei and Singapore — in place since 1967 — means these notes were technically acceptable tender on both sides of the Causeway, though in practice high-denomination Brunei notes rarely left the sultanate in any volume.

P#27 carries only a watermark and security thread for authentication, modest by the standards of year-2000 regional issues. Indonesian and Malaysian notes of the same period were already incorporating more layered features.
