The Feijó 500 Réis was struck as Brazil's currency system was entering its final years — the entire réis denomination would be abolished in 1942 when the cruzeiro replaced it at a rate of 1,000 réis to one cruzeiro. Padre Diogo Antônio Feijó, the coin's subject, had served as regent of Brazil from 1835 to 1837, a turbulent period of regional revolts including the Cabanagem and Balaiada uprisings that nearly fractured the young empire.
The thick planchet variety distinguishes this from the thinner issue produced concurrently, a split that arose from minting adjustments at the Casa da Moeda in Rio de Janeiro during the run.
