Obverse description Youthful draped bust of King Pedro V facing right, rendered in high relief with fine portrait detail characteristic of mid-19th century Portuguese coinage. The effigy depicts the king at an adolescent age, with short hair and a plain neckline. The circular legend surrounds the portrait, with the date appearing within the legend at the base. The field is smooth and unadorned, allowing the portrait to dominate the design.

Reverse description The crowned and mantled royal arms of Portugal occupy the central field, depicting the traditional Portuguese shield bearing the five quinas and the bordure of castles, set upon an ornate cartouche with scrollwork at the base. The royal mantle is draped symmetrically on either side of the shield, tied with decorative bows, and surmounted by the royal crown. The denomination '500 REIS' is inscribed in the exergue below the arms. The entire design is set within a beaded inner border.
