Obverse description Three-quarter facing bust of Martim Afonso de Sousa, the Portuguese nobleman who led the first colonizing expedition to Brazil in 1532, rendered in a bold, expressionistic relief with prominent beard and period costume visible at the truncation. The legend is ingeniously integrated into the field around the effigy in a distinctive typographic arrangement, with the words fragmented across the available space. The commemorative dates 1532 and 1932 appear in the lower left and lower right fields respectively, flanking the bust. The engraver's initial 'C' is visible in the lower right field. The overall design is the work of engraver Leopoldo Campos.

Reverse description Central design depicting a stylized representation of a cuirass or breastplate with a crosshatch (lattice) pattern, rendered in high relief and flanked by horizontally lined fields suggesting fabric or drapery. A small buckled belt or strap element is visible across the center of the breastplate, with a conical or pyramidal form at the lower center. The denomination numeral '5' appears prominently to the left and the currency abbreviation 'Rs' to the right, both rendered in an ornate, scrolled serif style. The field is bordered by a raised rim with fine reeding visible at the edge.
