Comments

Rio Grande do Norte's state treasury issued its own paper currency in 1897, a practice permitted under Brazil's early republican federalism, which granted considerable fiscal latitude to individual states in the years following the 1889 proclamation. This note is among the more obscure products of that experiment — RGN was among the smallest and least-populated states to exercise the privilege, and its emissions were correspondingly limited in volume.

Purcell's Recife-based lithographic house handled printing for several northeastern state issues during this period, making it difficult to assign precise print runs from surviving examples alone.
