| Obverse description | Central crowned Royal Arms of Portugal, depicting the traditional Portuguese escutcheon with castles and quinas (roundels), flanked by the mint marks P and O on either side denoting the Porto mint. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown rendered in the late Renaissance hammered style typical of the reign of Sebastião I. A circular Latin legend surrounds the design within a beaded border. The overall workmanship reflects the irregular flan characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century Portuguese hammered gold coinage. |
