Obverse description Central field occupied by the crowned royal arms of Portugal: a shield displaying the traditional quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each bearing five bezants) surrounded by the bordure of castles, the whole surmounted by a royal crown with elaborate arched and jewelled decoration. The shield is rendered in the hammered style typical of Iberian Renaissance goldsmithing. The circumferential legend in Latin capitals reads PHILIPPVS I D G REX PORTVGALIE, partially visible around the periphery of the flan.
