The 100mm, kilogram-class silver format had been used by the Royal Mint only a handful of times before this issue, most notably for the 2012 Diamond Jubilee piece. Producing a coin of this diameter in .9999 fine silver — rather than the more common .925 — creates significant challenges in die pressure and flow, which is why very few mints attempt four-nines purity at this planchet weight.
Elizabeth II turned 90 on 21 April 2016, becoming the first British monarch to reach that age. Mintage on pieces like this is typically held to the low hundreds.
