Issued to mark Pope Francis's visit to the Philippines in January 2015 — the first papal visit to the country since John Paul II came in 1995 — this piece was produced as a commemorative circulation issue rather than a collector proof, an unusual choice given the gold-plated finish. The Philippines is home to one of the largest Catholic populations in Asia, and the visit drew an estimated six million people to Rizal Park for the closing Mass, a crowd that rivaled the largest ever recorded for a papal event.
