The 500 Pesos Uruguayos note belongs to the "Fauna y Naturaleza" series, which replaced a portrait-based series and made Uruguay one of the few countries to issue a complete circulating series themed entirely around native wildlife and ecosystems — a deliberate editorial decision by the Banco Central, not a default. Oberthur Fiduciaire, acquired by FNMT-RCM in 2016 during this note's active production window, continued fulfillment under the transitional corporate structure.
Cotton substrate was retained despite Uruguay's broader experimentation with polymer for lower denominations, a practical judgment given the note's relatively high purchasing value and expected handling in formal transactions.
