Obverse description At right, an intaglio oval portrait bust of Simón Bolívar is framed within a fine-line border, with the issuer's name arched in letterpress across the top of the note. The face value appears in large numerals at centre within a guilloche panel and is repeated in smaller numerals at all four corners, while the denomination in words runs along the lower margin. The place and date of issue — Bogotá, Colombia, 7 de Agosto de 1973 — are printed below the central vignette.

(Translation: 500 The Bank of the Republic 500 Will pay to the bearer 500 Bogotá, Colombia August 7th, 1973 500 Five Hundred Pesos Oro 500)
Reverse description The central vignette presents a finely engraved intaglio view of the underground salt cathedral of Zipaquirá, rendered with architectural detail and chiaroscuro shading. The Banco de la República circular seal is positioned at left, with the denomination in words appearing beneath it, while the face value in numerals is placed at upper left. The inscription identifying the subject runs along the lower margin, and the denomination in words is split vertically along the right border.
