Obverse description Central vignette of José G. Artigas framed by allegorical figures representing the arts and sciences on either side, with the national coat of arms below the portrait. The face value appears in both numeral and word form flanking the central vignette, with the issuer's title in letterpress across the top. A detailed guilloche underprint frames the overall composition.
Obverse lettering el BANCO de le REPÚBLICA ORIENTAL del URUGUAY Pagará al portador y á la vista la cantidad de QUINIENTOS PESOS en moneda legal de oro sellado. Ley de 4 de Agosto de 1896 Montevideo, 24 de Agosto de 1896.
(Translation: The Bank of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay will pay to the bearer and at sight the amount of Five Hundred Pesos in legal currency of sealed gold. Law of August 4th, 1896. Montevideo, August 24th, 1896.)
Reverse description The face value in large numerals and words occupies the centre of the composition, dividing the issuer's name between the upper and lower registers. Allegorical vignettes of Minerva and Apollo, personifying the arts and sciences, flank the central denomination panel within an elaborate guilloche border.
