The 2001 issue falls in the final year before Spain abandoned the peseta entirely, with euro-denominated coinage entering circulation on January 1, 2002. The Royal Mint produced a number of collector pieces during this transitional window, partly as a revenue exercise and partly to document the closing chapter of a currency that had survived, in various forms, since 1869.
KM#1013 belongs to a crowded late-peseta collector series; check for the "M" crowned mint mark from Madrid.
