Perejil is a uninhabited rocky islet off Morocco's northern coast that triggered a genuine military standoff in July 2002, when Moroccan troops landed and planted a flag. Spain responded with a naval and special forces operation — Operation Romeo-Sierra — that removed them within hours, making it one of the few armed confrontations between NATO members in recent memory. The 2019 coin belongs to Spain's ongoing numismatic series commemorating disputed or historically contested Spanish territories.
