Obverse description Intaglio-printed three-quarter portrait of Catalan poet Jacinto Verdaguer (1845–1902) at right, wearing a traditional beret, set against a fine guilloche underprint in pastel tones at centre. The denomination "QUINIENTAS PESETAS" is rendered in large letterpress across the middle of the note, with the issuing date "MADRID, 23 de Julio de 1971" below. Three facsimile signatures of bank officials appear beneath their respective titles, and the printer's imprint "Fca. Nal. de Moneda y Timbre" runs along the lower margin.

Reverse description Central intaglio vignette of the hilltop village of Vernet-les-Bains with its church bell tower, set against the snow-capped massif of Canigó in the Pyrenees — a landscape closely associated with Verdaguer's epic poem "Canigó." The scene is rendered in fine line engraving in shades of blue, framed by elaborate guilloche borders with denomination numerals "500" in each corner.
