Macao's lunar gold issues of this period were struck during the final years before the territory's casino economy fully restructured its financial identity following the 2002 gaming liberalization. The Monetary Authority contracted these pieces primarily for collector export rather than domestic circulation, with the bulk of distribution routed through Hong Kong dealers and international bullion trading networks.
KM#136 corresponds to the half-ounce denomination in the rooster series, though the .999 fineness rather than the more common .9999 places it among the earlier purity standard issues before Macao's mint contracts tightened specifications.
