The 2003 series marked one of the final chapters for Banco Nacional Ultramarino as Macau's currency authority — the handover to China in 1999 had already shifted political realities, and the BNU continued issuing patacas under a new arrangement alongside the Bank of China, which gained parallel note-issuing rights post-handover. This 500-pataca denomination sits at the high end of everyday transactional currency in a territory where the Hong Kong dollar circulates freely alongside the pataca, keeping demand for large-denomination pataca notes relatively constrained.
Thomas De La Rue's involvement continues a relationship with Macanese currency that stretches back decades. Security provision on this issue is modest by the standards of the period — watermark and thread only, without the optical variables or color-shifting inks that contemporaneous high-value notes from comparable territories employed.
