Banco da China became one of Macau's three note-issuing banks only in 1995, a deliberate move to align the territory's financial architecture with Beijing's interests ahead of the 1999 handover from Portugal. The 500 Pataca denomination sits at the top of the practical circulation range — the 1000 Pataca note exists but rarely circulates — making this the highest-value note most residents and casino workers would regularly handle.
The 2008 start date for this series is not incidental: it coincides with the post-handover period during which Macau's gaming revenue had already surpassed Las Vegas, driving demand for higher-denomination notes in day-to-day commercial use.
