Mauritania's ouguiya is one of the few currencies in the world not decimalized — it divides into 5 khoums, a unit rooted in the old West African practice of counting in fifths. The Banque Centrale de Mauritanie had Giesecke & Devrient produce this series through a period of chronic inflation and IMF structural adjustment pressure, when the 500 ouguiya note carried genuine purchasing weight in the local economy.
G&D's Leipzig plant has supplied Mauritania across multiple series. The security package here — thread and watermark only — reflects the relatively modest specification tier the BCM contracted for this issue.
