| Obverse description | Central vignette is an intaglio portrait of José Gervasio Artigas (1764–1850), founding father and national hero of Uruguay, positioned at right of centre against a fine guilloche underprint. The national Coat of Arms of Uruguay appears to the left. The inscription ARTIGAS is printed beneath the portrait, with the denomination N$500 repeated in the corners and the full legend QUINIENTOS NUEVOS PESOS MONEDA NACIONAL across the lower register. |
