Finland's 500 Markkaa of 1975 belongs to a series that was among the first Finnish notes designed and printed entirely domestically, a shift from the country's earlier dependence on foreign security printers. The Finnish Security Printing House had been building that capability through the 1960s, and by the mid-1970s the operation was technically capable of handling the full production run in-house.

The watermark remains the sole listed security feature — modest by contemporary international standards, though Finland's relatively low counterfeiting pressure at the time made elaborate measures less urgent than in larger economies.
