| Reverse description | A naturalistically rendered full-body depiction of the Turkmenistan eyelid gecko (Eublepharis turkmenicus Darevsky) occupies the central field, shown in profile walking across a rocky ground line with scattered low vegetation. A stylised sprig or plant motif appears to the right of the animal. The scientific name arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination '500 MANAT' is inscribed to the upper right, the date '1996' to the lower left, and the Turkmen common name 'TÜRKMEN EUBLEFARY' along the lower arc. |

Turkmenistan's early commemorative coinage program, launched shortly after independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, leaned heavily on wildlife subjects — the gecko series among them — partly to court Western collector markets hungry for exotic Central Asian issues. The 925 silver standard was deliberately chosen to match Commonwealth-era specifications, making these coins compatible with the major international grading and distribution pipelines of the mid-1990s.
The Caspian gecko native to Turkmenistan's Karakum Desert was a pointed choice for a nation whose identity was being actively constructed by the Niyazov government at the time.
