Issued to mark the death of Heydar Aliyev, who had ruled Azerbaijan — first as Communist Party First Secretary during the Soviet period, then as elected President — and died in December 2003. The National Bank released this platinum piece within months of his passing, part of a broader commemorative program that elevated Aliyev's image into something closer to a state cult almost immediately after his death. His son Ilham had assumed the presidency just weeks before the elder Aliyev died, ensuring continuity of both dynasty and iconography.
