San Marino's Wildlife Protection series of the early 1990s was issued under a broader Italian-sponsored conservation framework, coinciding with regional efforts to address habitat loss in the Apennine peninsula. The republic's tiny land area — just over 61 square kilometers — gave these issues an ironic edge: San Marino had virtually no wildlife of its own to protect.
